Introduction: Educational Systems Through the Lens of Societal and Economic Development

Education has a significant impact on social and economic development since it contributes in a substantial way to the strengthening of social justice and equality although we must bear in mind that any changes in society are not made easily (Fallows & Steven, 2000; Morley, 2001). Moreover, aligning education with social and economic needs has a significant effect on economic development since those who complete a cycle of education want to be ready to enter the labor market. Indeed, all people going through the education process expect the labor market to be their final destination (Cranmer, 2006). Hence, what is the role and the contribution of education in a nation’s development that is both economic and sustainable? The main role of education is to strengthen social capital, raise learners’ awareness of issues related to the common good and create sustainable communities. Deepening social values and the development of social networks can only happen through progressive education and learning, based on the solid foundations of educational systems. Regardless of the type of education system (centralized or decentralized), the concept of education’s social responsibility is unique. What we are saying is that everyone recognizes the intrinsic value of education for social development; as Apple, et al. (2022, p. 3) put it, education is “civic courage”.
