Introduction

This chapter introduces Part II of the book, in which we report on what the surviving correspondence tells us about the process of translating Alfred Tarski’s monograph on truth into German. The correspondence in the files of the Polish Philosophical SocietyPolish Philosophical Society in Poznań was discovered in December 2013; Chap.  10 describes its character. The next two chapters describe the process of deciding to translate Tarski’s truth monograph into German and the process of vetting the translation. Chapter  13 describes four changes that Tarski initiated. Chapter  14 describes the way the original translation was changed to accommodate objections by logicians in Vienna to Tarski’s frequent appeals to intuition. The next two chapters describe and discuss other issues of translation raised in the correspondence and discrepancies between the Polish original and the German translation that are not alluded to in the correspondence. The next three chapters describe the errata submitted by Tarski, tell a convoluted story about Tarski’s off-prints, and extract from the correspondence information about monetary matters. The final chapter extracts from Tarski’s journal the dates of his skiing, mountaineering and touring trips during 1935 and gives brief biographies of his companions on those trips.
