Remarks on the Translation

We repeat from our earlier translation of Tarski’s companion paper on the concept of logical consequence the principles of translation that we followed in translating his paper on scientific semantics. Our first principle was intelligible accuracy. To the extent compatible with this principle, we aimed for a one-to-one correspondence between each term of the original and the term used as its English translation. We give examples of how we applied these principles. We display side by side two independently made translations of Tarski’s Polish-language summary of a talk on truth given in 1930 that used these principles, in order to display the exactness of a translation that follows them. We provide a link to an electronic supplement with a spreadsheet showing how we translated each term. Finally, we register our disagreement with proposals of Wilfrid HodgesHodges, Wilfrid for idiosyncratic translations of three crucial terms used by Tarski.
