Off-Prints

Off-printsOff-prints* are a topic in about 30% of the communications in the correspondence concerning the German translation of Tarski’s truth monograph. They come up for various reasons. (1) Tarski asked if he could buy extra off-prints and sell them through a Viennese bookstore; the Editorial Board decided that only complete copies of the journal volume could be sold. (2) When TwardowskiTwardowski, Kazimierz needed to know urgently if Tarski wanted to buy off-prints for free distribution, Tarski was mountaineering and unresponsive, with resulting further correspondence involving Karl PopperPopper, Karl, Maria KokoszyńskaKokoszyńska, Maria and Roman Ingarden. (3) After initially giving up on off-prints because of the cost, Tarski unexpectedly came into some money that allowed him to order 100 off-prints; TwardowskiTwardowski, Kazimierz replied that the request could not be fulfilled because some of the type had already been broken up, but later discovered that the printer without being asked had printed 50 off-prints. (4) TwardowskiTwardowski, Kazimierz made an unsuccessful attempt through KokoszyńskaKokoszyńska, Maria to get one of those off-prints for the Polish Philosophical SocietyPolish Philosophical Society’s library in Lwów. (5) Tarski asked for an explanation of why the cost on the invoice for the off-prints was more than 20% higher than the estimate that he had been given.
