The Process of Vetting and Modifying the Translation

FourCorrespondence concerning the German translation of Tarski’s truth monographvetting of the translation* people had a hand in translating Tarski’s truth monograph into German. Leopold BlausteinBlaustein, Leopold, a philosopher specializing in aesthetics, did the initial translation. Kazimierz AjdukiewiczAjdukiewicz, Kazimierz, a member of the Editorial Board of Studia Philosophica and of the philosophy department at the University of Lwów, checked Blaustein’sBlaustein, Leopold translation for fidelity to the Polish original. Kazimierz TwardowskiTwardowski, Kazimierz, a native speaker of Austrian German who was raised and educated in Vienna, checked the translation for linguistic correctness. Tarski received the resulting revised translation in Vienna and he consulted logicians there about the terminology. The first half of the work was set in type before Tarski reviewed the translation, the second half after he reviewed it. Tarski wrote the postscript to the German translation in Polish; AjdukiewiczAjdukiewicz, Kazimierz translated it into German; Tarski reviewed his translation but for lack of time was unable to consult German-speaking logicians about its terminology. Tarski expressed unhappiness about this translation; the Polish original seems to have been lost in the destruction of the Second World War. Tarski wrote the historical note that appears at the very end of the German translation in German.
