The Academic Citizen Scholar

This chapter extends the evolving discourse on ‘graduate attributes’ in universities to academic faculty, exploring the societal expectations reshaping higher education. The Citizen Scholar model is proposed as crucial in defining ‘academic attributes’ for faculty, aligning with the qualities we expect from our students. We argue for the development of ‘academic citizen scholars’ who embody heterodoxy, respectful disagreement, and embrace skepticism. It underscores the need for educators to model attributes, fostering a transformative and inclusive university environment. We also emphasize the need for a collective commitment to brave spaces, cultural humility, and mistakability, promoting an entrepreneurial spirit for both students and the professoriate. This holistic and collaborative approach is crucial, involving university leadership, academics, and decision-makers in shaping an environment aligned with academic citizenship ideals.
