Ilya Spitkovsky’s Pioneering Work on Massive Local Spectra of Toeplitz Operators

This is an expository paper describing a few selected topics of Ilya Spitkovsky’s work. We focus the attention on his pioneering contributions to the detection and identification of massive local spectra of Toeplitz operators caused by jumps of the symbols and embark on the subsequent development of the story.
