This chapter will go through the details of lipid metabolism, starting with the biological important lipids. We will go through the oxidation of fatty acids, including the carnitine shuttle. We will go through beta oxidation. We will go through peroxisomal fatty acid metabolism and ketone body formation. Through this we will discuss disorders like diabetic ketoacidosis. We will then discuss fatty acid synthesis and elongation. We will talk about the regulation of fatty acids. Will then talk about the metabolism of more complex lipids such as a glycolipids and sphingolipids. In this context, we will talk about the disorders known as sphingolipidoses, such as Tay-Sachs disease. We will then delve into prostaglandins and finally cholesterol metabolism and lipid transport.
