This study examines fact-checking content production in Indonesian and Malaysian online news media. The study uses Vincent Mosco’s media political economy theory and cultural capital of Bourdieu’s to explore fact-checking strategies in both countries. The qualitative approach is used with data obtained through interviews with 24 journalists from 18 online news media in two countries. This research shows that Indonesian and Malaysian media fact-checking content production share similarities and differences in commodification, spatialisation, structuration, and culture. Indonesian journalists are more active than Malaysian in modifying fact-checking news to make it more attractive and accommodating to native advertising. Fact-checking reporters are encouraged to attend fact-check courses and multitask in their work. Media controlled by the same owner share fact-check content and media leverage the hoax-buster community to aid their work. Fact-checks also rejuvenate the media’s position as the primary source of information by offering quality journalism.

摘要
