Citizen journalism is a contested term frequently used to describe journalistic practices and processes performed by non-professional actors working outside of formal newsrooms. In this context, the discussion around citizen journalism often tends to centre around questions of who is considered a journalist and what is counted as journalism in a digital age, and there has been comparatively little focus on how digital tools and platforms have challenged and opened up citizen reporting in ways that are both similar to and different from related transformations of conventional news environments. Through a case study of the OurHealth programme, one of South Africa’s longest-running citizen journalism initiatives, this chapter explores ways in which digital innovation was integral to the OurHealth model—including novel adaptations of mobile technology to serve citizen journalists working in rural and remote areas—but also acknowledges the challenges and shortcomings of the digital-citizen and digital-first newsroom.
