This chapter argues for approaching citizen produced media content as data, rather than journalism. It does so by drawing on a case study of the January 6 insurrection in the United States, which was widely documented by its participants. The chapter finds that mainstream journalists as well as ordinary people horrified at the attack on their government used the citizen media content as data to investigate and archive evidence of the attempted coup. The chapter ends with a look at the ways citizen data has increasingly become the source of conspiracy theories.
