Our opening chapter provides an overview of recent developments in digital journalism globally. We provide an analysis of some of the most recent research in digital journalism studies. We also cite good examples to unravel opportunities and challenges for digital journalism across the world. We then take a stance against the exclusion of non-Western digital journalism scholarship, calling on a more broadened conceptualization of the field. Our handbook is one of the many initiatives that journalism scholars from several regions of the world are taking to spotlight the work emerging in the field particularly in authoritarian regions of the world. We argue that attempts to discuss the epistemology of digital journalism studies should embrace experiences from the Global South, providing reasons why.
