Teaching Arguments with Nísia Floresta

To this end, we start with an introduction to Floresta’s life and historical contextContext, describing who she was and who was part of her intellectual circle. Then we sort Floresta's sources and influences, summarising her topics of interest such as politics, civilisation, condition of indigenous and black enslaved people, the role of religion, and, most specially, the education of womenEducation of Women. On this second part of the chapter, it is exposed the wild profusion of literary forms explored by Floresta in her writings, ranging from travel diaries to didactic fiction. Then, on the third part of the chapter, we suggest that to teach Floresta, one should pay attention to three aspects of her philosophyPhilosophy in order to best fit her in a teachingTeaching contextContext: her contribution to the discussions on education of womenEducation of Women, the fact that her philosophyPhilosophy can be historically located on the logical feminist tradition, and to the argumentative nature of her texts. To conclude, some central philosophical thesis of Floresta are presented and exemplified through an exercise in argument mapping and comparative argument analysis.
