Moxibustion
摘要
Moxibustion (known as moxa) is a form of heat therapy in dried herb mugwort, which is burned on or near the acupuncture points and meridians. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), moxibustion is used to treat a wide range of conditions. It is believed to stimulate the flow of Qi and Blood, which is thought to promote healing and restore balance in the body. Moxa is also used to warm and invigorate the body, as well as to expel cold and dampness that can accumulate and cause illness. In addition, moxa is thought to tonify the organs and immune system and to improve overall circulation. The literature records on moxibustion can be traced back to the Shang period (1600 BC–1046 BC). This chapter explains what moxibustion is, outlines its historical origins, and explores different types of moxibustion (cone moxa, stick moxa, loose moxa, thread moxa, etc.) throughout history and their benefits. This chapter also includes moxa techniques, including direct moxibustion, indirect moxibustion, Tian Jiu, modern moxa, and warm needling. It discusses the indications and the side effects of the latest research.
