Scalp Acupuncture

Scalp acupuncture (SA) is a newly developed acupuncture technique. It is a combination of traditional acupuncture technique and modern anatomical and neurological knowledge. This chapter introduces the development and history of the technique, an overview of the Brain according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) classification and the anatomy of scalp. To support the reader there are detailed listings of the scalp acupuncture stimulation areas and their related indications with easy-to-follow, full-colour illustrations. Detailed explanations are provided of the scalp acupuncture needling techniques as well as cautions and contraindications including for children and during pregnancy. Listed at the end of the chapter are some of the commonly seen neurological and psychological disorders with treatment with scalp acupuncture is indicated with helpful point considerations to add to the treatment. Finally, some key research into scalp acupuncture and its mechanisms are summarised.
