This chapter begins by introducing the background of backscatter communication, encompassing its concepts and characteristics. Then, it highlights potential Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications driven by backscatter communication. After that, it emphasizes the importance of high-reliability, high-efficiency spectrum utilization, cross-technology support, and concurrent backscatter solutions to enable these IoT applications. Finally, this chapter provides a vision for the organization of this book.
