Progressive Nationalism

This chapter introduces a Progressive Nationalist vision as a response to alienation, developed on the ethical foundation established in preceding chapters. The Progressive Nationalism unfolds across three stages, with this chapter focusing on its multicultural orientation. Contrasted with right-communitarians, who propose populist ethnonationalism with limited substantive solutions, the Progressive Nationalism seeks to refine and extend these ideas. The chapter rejects Viroli’s wholly negative conceptualisation of nationalism and envisions a multicultural nationalism that fosters a pluralistic, common good-oriented narrative. Divided into three sections, the chapter explores common good patriotism, national narratives and culture, and the construction of multicultural nationalism. It asserts three key benefits: active inclusion and acknowledgement in the community, the amelioration of community tensions through a unified national framing, and the rejection of rootlessness while reintroducing working-class values into the national imaginary.
