Is the Working-Class Alienated?

This chapter examines the working-class experience through the lens of alienation, focusing on dignity, community, and agency. Fundamentally, it identifies how the rise of the Knowledge Economy reshapes values, how community bonds have weakened post-Thatcher, exacerbating intra-class divisions, and how the left’s failure to provide an inclusive narrative fuels hostility, hindering collective efforts. The working-class, facing a tangible decline across these dimensions, is understood to be alienated. The chapter proposes a shift towards a common-good-centric economic model and leans towards a Progressive Nationalist narrative, drawing from British Idealists to address these challenges and pave the way for a less-alienating existence.
