Formulae Used in Echocardiogram

There are several formulae used in Echocardiogram. This is because Echocardiogram mainly deals with hemodynamics. It is very important to know the relationship between pressure and velocity of blood flow. The main goal of Echocardiogram is to use the formulae to calculate the Valve areas so as to know if they are out of the norm. Also, it helps to understand the changes occurring in the walls of the chambers either due to pressure or volume overload. The Pressure/Volume Relationship helps us to determine the severity of the lesion may it be stenosis or regurgitation. Also, knowing the components of the Equation helps one to determine which Views are needed in order to fill in the details so that the calculation can be carried out. Many times, software are available to do the calculation and the person performing the Echocardiogram just has to use the calipers to measure the distance between two points (Ex: V max, LVOT area, etc.). Thus, after reading this chapter, in which most of the formulae are listed, the person performing the Echocardiogram will be able to create a more meaningful preliminary report, which is informative and accurate pertaining to the diagnosis and collaborates well with the final report. The principles of ultrasound should be well understood in order use the machine properly. Hence, the formulae and equations used in ultrasound physics are listed also in this chapter.
