Cultural Policy of the Oppressed: An Analysis of Colonialism, Expansionism, and Imperialism in Cultural Policy Scholarship

In this chapter, we continue the inquiry that we initiated in (Cultural policy of the oppressed, Forthcoming) by posing the research question, what might a textual analysis of colonialism, expansionism, and imperialism reveal about cultural policy scholars’ understanding of oppression? Colonialism, expansionism, and imperialism remain a challenging trifecta for arts entrepreneurs and leaders to navigate creatively and courageously. Examining the ways in which scholars have understood colonialism, expansionism, and imperialism as specific forms of oppression, or not, further engages scholars in joining arts entrepreneurs and leaders in innovating institutional solutions to addressing the wicked problem of ensuring and protecting the creative justice of people who have experienced historic and longitudinal oppression because of their social identities.
