Integrated Passive Components

Resistors, capacitors, varactors, and inductors belong to a family of devices called passive components. The components are passive inasmuch as they can respond to a current or voltage signal but cannot amplify them. The components can be connected externally as discrete devices or integrated within a chip. Passive components, in particular resistors and capacitors, can occupy a substantial area of the chip. They should be optimized by minimizing their area while maintaining their desired electrical properties.
