Multidisciplinary Team Management of Periprosthetic Knee Infections

Revision surgery for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains unpredictable, with variable success rates in the literature. Their management often requires multiple interventions and close monitoring both medically and surgically. Close discussions between orthopedic surgeons, microbiologists, primary care physicians, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and peri-operative care physicians are required to ensure optimal levels of monitoring and care. Although the concept of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) is not a new one, it is relatively novel in the treatment of PJI. The potential benefits of care delivered via an MDT approach can be experienced on a variety of levels. There is increasing evidence of the benefits of MDT approach in the treatment of PJI to not only improve the patients’ care and journey, but also in improving clinicians understanding of how best to manage PJI’s and in enhancing specialized centers organization and infrastructure to best manage PJI locally and regionally.
