Governance in Higher (Universities and Other Tertiary) Education Institutions in Africa

The chapter deals with the governance of higher education institutions (HEIs) in Africa and particularly universities which are the vanguards of higher education (HE). Premised on the notion that governance is the heart of the HEI, the chapter discusses the functions of the university in the modern society, the role of good governance in increasing access, relevance and comparative excellence in HE, the institutional setup for governance in universities on account of ownership (public or private) and purpose (for profit or not-for-profit), the functions of the key governance organs in universities, the types of governance in universities and the challenges in university governance in Africa.
