Nanomaterial Synthesis Using Tyre and Plastic

Synthesis of nanomaterials has opened the horizon for the interdisciplinary research and involves many aspects of physics, chemistry, material sciences and engineering. On viewing the bigger picture, it is observed that the sustainability of product is equally important. The use of alternative route or material plays a key role to improvise the products and also enhance the environment friendly techniques. One such platform is synthesis of nanoparticles from industrial and consumer waste. According to the studies mentioned in United Nations Environment Program, 11.2 billion tons of solid waste are projected every year. Industrial waste, which is anyhow leading to the disharmony of the environment and effecting the health of population, can be redirected to the production of nanoparticles. On a large scale, every year, tyre scrap is added to the environmental load, causing pollution and thus being banned in many countries. The waste consists mainly of carbon, which has the potential to be converted to the environment friendly product like nanomaterials. Similarly, plastic debris are one of the major threats to aquatic and land animals. Alternatively, they can be a feedstock for the generating industry for the synthesis of nanomaterials. In this chapter, the focus is to discuss industrial wastes from tyres and plastic specifically for the synthesis of nanomaterials, along with different synthesis techniques. Also, the challenges and problems being faced while scaling up the method are discussed.
