摘要

This chapter provides an overview of the technological advancements in the field of deep-sea mining. The chapter commences with an introductory section that explores the initial technologies developed for deep-sea mining. It serves as a foundation for the subsequent discussions on the advancements made by different entities in the field. The chapter then presents a historical perspective related to deep-sea mining and then transitions to a discussion of present-day efforts and phased execution strategies undertaken. This section highlights the evolution of deep-sea mining endeavours. Subsequently, the chapter outlines various subsystems and infrastructure required for activities related to deep-sea mining. These components are critical to the successful execution of deep-sea mining operations. The chapter then discusses the operation of collector systems, crushers, and nodule transport systems, with a focus on local pumping techniques. This section sheds light on the crucial equipment and processes involved in deep-sea mining. The narrative progresses to describe the successful sea trials conducted at a depth of 5270 meters in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB). These trials assess the manoeuvrability of a crawler in deep-sea conditions, a pivotal aspect of the mining program. The chapter also covers the different aspects of environmental disturbances and their technological remedies. This chapter helps us understand the importance of responsible and sustainable practices in deep-sea mining.
