Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Highly Selective Sorbents in Sample Preparation Techniques for Extracting Emerging Pollutants from Environmental Water

Recently, the importance of sample preparation techniques has been increasing due to the fact that more complex experiments are taking place in the extraction and determination processes, and there is a growing need for advanced results. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) possess specific voids that are compatible with binding targeted molecules, along with their geometrical analogs. Additionally, the high preferability of MIPs is related to their affordability, simplicity, and stability. MIPs are incorporated into various sample preparation techniques, such as solid-phase extraction (SPE), solid-phase microextraction (SPME), dispersive solid-phase extraction (DSPE), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), and magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). This integration produces an efficient sample preparation technique that has expanded its application in the field of environmental sample analysis. This chapter represents a review of recent research results (2018–2023) on MIPs and evaluates their potential as sorbents in sample preparation for the extraction of emerging pollutants from environmental samples.
