Almond Species Classification

Originally classified as Amygdalus communis, cultivated almonds, as well as their close relatives, are currently classified in the genus Prunus within the order Rosales, the clade Rosids, the family Rosaceae, and the Amygdaloideae (Prunoideae) subfamily. The Prunus genus has several categories, including sub-genera, series, sections, and groups. In modern classifications, almond species are classified into the Amygdalus subgenus, which includes two series: Icosandrae and Dodecandrae. The Icosandrae is divided into four sections: Euamygdalus, Spartioides, Chamaeamygdalus, and Leptopus. The second series, Dodecandrae, is divided into two sections: Lycioides and Scorpius. Cultivated almonds belong to the Amygdalus subgenus, the series lcosandrae, the section Euamygdalus, and the Amygdalus group.
