Introduction

Rubus acanthophyllos Focke is an herbaceous plant that is distributed from Colombia to Bolivia. This plant is native to western South America in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Few investigations have been conducted on the biology and ecology of this species. This species is currently underutilized and it has been used as a food source and in traditional medicine. The flower of R. acanthophyllos bears five pink petals that are surrounded by five reddish sepals with a yellowish tip. The inflorescence is a cyme approximately 3–6 cm in length that bears 1–3 flowers. The author observed plants flowering and fruiting at the same time in Matarredonda, Cundinamarca State, in late October of 2023. The author measured the mean fruit length, width, and weight, which were 15.17 mm, 15, 57, and 2.21 g, respectively. The maximum, average, and minimum pyrene lengths were 4.25 mm, 3.78 mm, and 3.27 mm, respectively. The seed coat sculpturing of R. acanthophyllos has a remarkable series of cell-like compartments. This seed coat sculpturing is unique to this species.
