Fruit and Pyrene

Blackberry fruits are referred to as an aggregation of drupelets. Each drupelet is made up of a fleshy mesocarp, a thin exocarp, and a hard endocarp named pyrene. The pyrene resides within a fleshy mesocarp, which is covered by the exocarp or fruit skin. Mature fruits have a globose shape reddish to black and bear 10–35 drupeoles. The author found that the mean length, width, and weight values were 16.32 mm, 18.15 mm, and 2.70 g, respectively. Overall, Rubus bogotensis Kunth fruits have a spherical shape. Fruit length-weight relationships showed a b value of 0.31 and a correlation coefficient of 0.74. This is a moderate to strong correlation. Fruit width-weight relationships had a b value of 0.39 and a correlation coefficient of 0.69. This shows a moderate to strong correlation. The pyrene is a lignified and hardened endocarp. The mean R. bogotensis pyrene length, width, and weight were 5.85 mm, 3.22 mm, and 10.54 mg, respectively. It has one of the largest and heaviest pyrenes among Rubus species. R. bogotensis bears one of the most remarkable, distinctive, and specific types of seed coat sculpturing among Rubus species.
