Propagation and Cultivation

Rubus bogotensis Kunth is cultivated at a local scale and no large-scale commercial orchards are known. It is cultivated in Santander, Cundinamarca, Valle del Cauca, and Antioquia states, Colombia. R. bogotensis is propagated both sexually and asexually. Propagation methods include stakes, apical stems, short 15 cm shoots, and in vitro propagation. Pyrenes have been used to propagate the plant, but they take a long time to germinate and thus are not a reliable and consistent way to obtain young plants. Germination often takes more than 12 months. Pyrenes need to pass through the gut of a bird or mammal for effective germination to occur. Rubus bogotensis is cultivated from 1700 to 3200 m above sea level (m. a. s. l.) in Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Valle del Cauca, and Santander states, Colombia. Plants have been observed to produce high crop yields in October near La Calera, Cundinamarca State, Colombia.
