Assertiveness and Empathy as Educable Social Skills for Human Development: A Challenge for Education in the Twenty-First Century

This text employs a theoretical methodology grounded in a literature review, facilitating the development of a conceptual framework that elucidates the connections between assertive communication and empathy. It is a commonly held belief that assertive individuals may come across as insensitive to the needs of others. In contrast, concurrently, highly empathetic individuals may encounter challenges articulating their thoughts assertively and effectively conveying their desires. The chapter contends that one can cultivate both these skills simultaneously, emphasising the importance of fostering Assertiveness and empathy to enrich communication and enhance overall human well-being. From an educational perspective, attaining this objective is viable through suitable approaches and methodologies. The chapter presents pedagogical alternatives for addressing Assertiveness and empathy within the educational context, from early education to university levels.
