Peroxisomal Biomarkers

Peroxisomes are important organelles that are needed for both degradative and synthetic functions mainly related to complex lipid and fatty acid metabolism. Disturbance of either the biogenesis of the peroxisome or the deficiency of single peroxisomal enzymes can lead to disease and in this chapter we describe three analyses encompassing four different peroxisomal biomarkers: very long-chain fatty acids, branched-chain fatty acids, C26:0-lysoPC, and plasmalogens. Two other peroxisomal biomarker analyses, that of bile acids and pipecolic acid, are described elsewhere in this book.
