The Syrian Refugees’ Integration Challenges in the U.S. and the Roadmap for Integration Policies

The chapter recapitulates the key discussion points in this volume: the integration situation of Syrian refugees in the United States, emphasizing obstacles that prevent their successful integration. Moreover, it points out the Syrian refugees’ integration challenges. First, language illiteracy hinders Syrians’ ability to pass the citizenship test and limits their access to employment opportunities, private access to healthcare, and social integration and interaction with host communities. Second, the health conditions and mental health issues (PTSD) of Syrian refugees pose significant challenges to their labor market participation, social integration, and interpersonal relationships. Third, housing affordability and quality cause financial stress and affect their health and feelings of isolation. Fourth, the political apathy, particularly among male refugees, coupled with the absence of official channels that educate them on their rights and duties in the United States, poses a challenge to their legal integration. Moving forward, this chapter explores how integration policies can be improved by emphasizing the importance of mainstreaming integration policies, incorporating gender mainstreaming into integration efforts, federalizing the integration process, and considering the role of philanthropy. Along with these key factors, additional enablers could prove beneficial, such as engaging resettled refugees in the policymaking process, utilizing crowdsourcing for ideation, implementing AI and machine learning in refugee placement, and adopting monitoring and evaluation systems to track integration outcomes. The chapter draws insights from the experiences of other Western democratic nations to enhance integration efforts.
