Integration as a Proxy Theory and Governance

This chapter delves into the integration concept as an analytical component from a theoretical lens and as a governance system. It aims to understand integration theories and praxes that revolve around the reception and integration of forced migrants. To better explore the concept of integration, the chapter reviews selected established integration frameworks that identify the key components of refugees’ and other migrants’ integration. Alongside, it discusses the author’s Refugee Integration Framework as the intricate process of Syrian refugee integration in the United States, with a particular focus on the various stages of resettlement and integration situation. Moreover, it deliberates the integration catalyst at individual, organizational, and institutional levels. It analyzes the integration approaches from a comparative perspective by differentiating between the laissez-faire approach in the United States, the project-based/multi-level governance model in Germany, and the Swiss Temporary integration approach. The conclusion runs to the significance of integration from a theoretical lens, and practice extends to being an essential concept for dealing with issues of refugees and immigrants. It is presented as one of the durable solutions by policymakers and experts in the relevant humanitarian institutions.
