Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) for Managed Aquifer Recharge and Water Quality Improvement in the MENA Region

摘要

Water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions, notably in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), poses significant challenges for both human populations and natural ecosystems. These regions face difficulties due to low rainfall, high rates of evaporation, and a precarious balance between water supply and demand, making water scarcity a critical issue impacting various development aspects. Soil Aquifer Treatment (SAT) used for Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) offers a sustainable approach for long-term water management. In the context of increasing global water shortages, SAT stands out as a resilient and environmentally friendly method that not only replenishes aquifers but also enhances water quality. This chapter aims to contribute to the expanding knowledge base on SAT, providing valuable insights for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners involved in sustainable water resource management. Additionally, the chapter discusses challenges and recommendations for implementing SAT technology in the MENA region. SAT could be a particularly viable solution for enhancing water resources and improving the partially treated wastewater in MENA countries, especially in developing nations.
