The UK

This chapter presents and discusses our data from those teaching and lecturing in the UK in a language (and in one case in English but from a different culture) second or other than their own. As with the previous chapter we focus on the role of languages, cultures, and personalities in elements such as teaching, communication, email, phone, socializing. The chapter also discusses aspects such as employment conditions such as pay, pensions, study leave, holidays, and their role in the institution. Interestingly, however, the chapter details how this line of discussion did not engage the interviewees as much as relationships with colleagues, students, office space, and facilities including university food. The chapter also focuses on institutional culture and aspects such as support, students, colleagues, and international strategy. The chapter also discusses both internal facilities such as meetings, signs, staff space and external facilities such as housing, shopping, family, and socializing. Throughout, and as with the previous and subsequent chapter, the chapter highlights and illustrates where languages, cultures, and personalities have played a role together rather than individually. Key literature is drawn upon for comparison and contrast throughout.
