Narrative Analysis and Framing Analysis of Disinformation

This chapter situates the current study in narrative methodology and discusses how looking at the world as the telling of stories can help us to see how strategies of disinformation are discursively constructed, and how they become harmful. Framing analysis is also included in the method, however, to provide insights into how problems and solutions are defined and explained in the news coverage. Framing analysis enables a systematic and structured reading of the material, and therefore acts to provide an overview of the news content studied. A major part of the analysis concerns the identification and analysis of strategic narratives, and how these are constructed and take on meaning. Narrative analysis is the method selected. The chapter presents and discusses the narrative approach to the study of news coverage and the methodology used in the empirical analyses.
