Policemen in England Helped Farmers from March 1917 to the End of the War

Following from previous chapters demonstrating the increasing need for additional manpower in agriculture in Spring, 1917 due to impending food privation, this chapter gives the numbers of policemenPolicemen released into agriculture in England. Details of each location provide the names of Chief ConstablesChief Constable and the composition of each force with its depletion due to war enlistment. A brief geography of each area shows the main ltypes of farming and the agricultural workforce depletion before and since the outbreak of war. The background to the food crisis in Spring 1917 in each area and the different local pressures to feed the population demonstrate why policemenPolicemen were needed and their contribution. Further help from the police for agriculture was found both in autumn 1917 and the requests in spring 1918.
