Transit-Oriented Development and Land in African Cities

This study explored land challenges related to Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) in African cities, particularly focusing on Lagos. The research identified gaps in existing literature regarding the relationship between TOD and land challenges in urban areas near transit stations. A scoping study was conducted in Lagos to pinpoint the key research priorities for TOD in the city, aiming to enhance collaboration between government agencies, communities, and professionals in generating data on land use, value, and market trends for TOD planning and implementation. Through a methodical review of literature and qualitative analysis, the scoping study examined how land performs in supporting TOD in a rapidly developing African megacity like Lagos. The findings suggest that land around transit nodes in Lagos is not optimally utilized to support TOD, highlighting the thematic-based research priorities for Lagos State which revolves around the importance of a robust public transportation system for regional accessibility and urban development as well as understanding the crucial factors that hinder land from effectively supporting successful implementation of TOD.
