Transit-Oriented Development and Urban Infrastructure in African Cities

Urban infrastructure is critical to the functionality of African cities and requires deep theoretical and cultural insights for sustainable developments. Calthorpe (1993) used the term transit-oriented development (TOD) for the first time to address the urban sprawl caused by the usage of too many cars and the disappearance of community centers in America. TOD principles present the theoretical foundation for new urbanism and focuses on effectively integrating mixed-use communities and encouraging public transit use. Globally, TOD has been deployed to redefine urban infrastructure development. The dearth of urban infrastructure in African cites requires deploying structured models like TOD for planning and development.
