Urban Infrastructure and Transit-Oriented Development in Freetown, Sierra Leone

Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, is in the western area of the country. The city is located on a mountainous peninsula, making the topography extremely challenging (Allen et al., 2020; Koroma et al., 2018). It is the largest city in the country and has a total land area of 74 square kilometres with a coastline of about 40 kilometres. Despite its difficult topography, it has experienced an incredible urban sprawl. In part, this unstructured development is due to its rapidly growing population (MLCPE/FCC, 2014; World Bank, 2019).
