The research literature generates narratives about community colleges that both shape and reflect organizational image, culture, and identity. Over time, these narratives form sagas that present a dominant image that shapes the way community colleges are viewed as organizations. This chapter questions whose narratives shape these research sagas, which perspectives are dominant, and how this shapes the way community colleges are viewed. In this chapter, I present an updated generational framework that I used to (re)view research sagas over the generations, focusing on two key sagas that span the generations: a saga of salvation, and a saga of multiplicity and paradox. These sagas reflect organizational complexity and the ways that researchers attempt to make sense of aims and outcomes that are often paradoxical.
