In this reflection on my life in higher education, I seek to problematize what I see as the prevailing scripts in the field. The ensuing pages provide counter-narratives to the dominant storylines as I have experienced them over four decades, and as I see them playing out currently for students and faculty. The fulcrums that I address are about the pressure to subordinate life and purpose to “career,” to sacrifice advocacy and activism for “neutrality,” and to sublimate emotions and affect to dispassionate “professionalism.” In offering my thoughts about, “Writing and enacting a scholarly life of advocacy and activism,” my aim is to help facilitate, support, and catalyze readers’ choices in their lives that front and center “Purpose, community, and joy.
