University Training and Reality: On the Education of Architects

The current city, in every country of the world, is a complex reality, in which different modernities and different traditions live together. Cities and metropolises in the emerging countries have become so complex and stratified that they can now be comparable, in terms of complexity and close coexistence of different cultures. Briefly illustrating some outcomes and current activity of the UNESCO Chair in “Sustainable Urban Quality and Urban Culture, notably in Africa” established in Sapienza Università di Roma in 2013, the text advocates relevant issues on the current education of the architects looking at the tradition the architectural studies and in the Rome School of Architecture, the importance of heritage studies and a realistic approach to the profession of the architect.
