Investigating the Experience of Empathy

This chapter examines King Lear, identifying the essential components of an empathic relationship in a clinical setting from a study of the play. A brief synopsis of King Lear highlights issues of family dynamics, loss, grief, ageing, mental illness, and suffering. In analysing the process of empathising with the Other we can derive the constituents of relational empathy. The chapter concludes with teaching suggestions for healthcare educators wishing to inspire empathy in their students.
