This paper presents the application of Multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MFDFA) for investigating the multifractal properties of river stage time series of Indian rivers for the first time. The MFDFA method was applied to detect the long-range correlations and the multifractal behavior of river stage time series of 47 locations from Krishna, Cauvery and West Flowing Rivers of Tadri-Kanyakumari (WFR Basin) basins of southern India. The study found that all the Hurst exponent (H) values are more than 0.5 with an average of 0.825, indicating the property of long-memory persistence in the stage data of south Indian rivers. Different river stage datasets indicated strong multifractal degree ranging from 0.57 to 4.5 with an average spectral width of 1.248. It is further noted that the Hurst and Hölder exponents of river stage records are well correlated with a value of 0.87. All the time series except two of WFR basin indicated a positive asymmetry showing the strong probability of high fluctuations. Basin wise analysis showed that the highest average persistence is for WFR basin data while the highest average multifractal width was for Krishna basin datasets. These first results are of paramount importance as they represent a preliminary step towards establishing stage-discharge relationships from a multifractal standpoint, offering potential support for effective flood management in south Indian basins amid a changing climate scenario.
