The Mentality of the Greek Way of War, the Battle of Chaeronea, and the Rise of Macedon
摘要
This chapter further describes the structure of the Athenian navy and how land army, the so-called hoplite phalanx, was organized. It describes the logic behind the phalanx land army organization and then narrates, in brief, the Battle of Chaeronea, which was a pivotal battle, with which the Macedonians prevailed over the Southern Greeks, establishing a new order of things in Southern Greece. The defeat at Chaeronea was a milestone, because it was combined with the gradual decline of Athens and the rise of Macedon in the Greek and global affairs of the times.
