Analysis

In comparative research that seeks to identify common features not only of different musical cultures, but also of the sound organisations produced by different species, it is essential to have common criteria for analysis. What is usually called music analysis is almost useless. Indeed, its concepts only apply sufficiently well to European tonal music. The intention to bypass the categories and limits ordinarily set by different cultures forces us to use more neutral and general tools of observation as far as possible.
