An Empirical Analysis of the Consonantal Phonemic Patterns and Characteristics of English Spoken in India

In India, there are a large number of native languages spoken with multiple dialects, allowing the speakers to share various common and distinct pronunciation characteristics. These characteristics are derived from region to region and are highly influenced by their native languages. ‘Indian English’ is a widespread and well-known language for its many eccentricities. It is widely spoken as a second language comprising 6.8% out of 12% of the Indian population. It influences the quality of pronunciation based on their native speaking style, accents and learning environment. In this paper, we focus on the accent variations in Indian English, emphasising consonant analysis. The present investigation has been performed on the PRAAT tool that signifies notable and observable occurrences of similarities and dissimilarities in the phonetic and phonological aspects of spoken English in India with that of few prominently spoken native languages of India. These inferences in future will lead to the demand for an extensive experimental study on Indian English due to the influence of the native language in the realistic environment.
