Anxiety and Depressive Disorders in Older Adults

This chapter critically examines the prevalence, manifestations, and treatment of depression and anxiety among older adults, a demographic often overlooked in mental health research and discourse. Outlining the symptomatic profiles of these conditions in older individuals, we consider both lifelong mental health challenges and those emerging in later life. Delving into the complexities of diagnosing and treating depression and anxiety in the presence of comorbidities common in older age, such as cognitive decline and chronic physical illnesses, highlights the intricate relationship between physical and mental health in this population. The lived experiences of older adults with these mental health issues are explored, with particular attention to the impact of life transitions, grief, and changes in social roles, as well as the critical influence of social factors like isolation, socioeconomic status, and family dynamics. We advocate for a holistic approach to treatment, encompassing both pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies tailored to the older adult’s unique physiological and psychological profile. Emphasizing the importance of psychotherapy, digital interventions, and the role of social work in providing comprehensive support, we offer a nuanced understanding of depression and anxiety in older adulthood. This chapter aims to inform more effective treatment approaches and improve the quality of life for this vulnerable segment of the population, urging a shift toward a more inclusive and empathetic perspective in mental health care.
